se funda la banda el año 1988 en Illionois, Chicago, por Billy Corgan (guit y voz) y James Iha (guitarra), en un principio usaban una maquina que se programaba y llevaba los ritmos de las canciones, posteriormente integraron a D'arcy Wretzky (Bajo), ya conformados como un trio, comenzaron a hacer presentaciones; Joe Shanahan quien era propietario de un famoso local de Chicago les ofrecio su apoyo por con el compromiso de en vez de usar una maquina añadieran un baterista de verdad, por lo que se integra Jimmy Chamberlin y ya como formacion "normal" comienzan a trabajar en mas canciones; pero en un principio fue dificil tener un baterista real especificamente porque Chamberlin era adicto al Jazz y poco o nada sabia del rock alternativo, por eso, y sin deseos de buscar otro baterista, comienzan a prepararlo y enseñarle cosas nuevas y ritmos aptos para las melodias de Smashing pumpkins, de aqui comienza la historia de la banda, con exitos y tambien fracasos, en 1996 luego de que Chamber casi muere por una sobredosis de heroina y alcohol fue expulsado de la banda, siendo reemplazado por varios bateristas de sesion, lo cual no tenia muy contentos a la banda, finalmente, luego de varios año Chamerlin se integra nuevamanet e al abanda e n 1999, pero abandona el grupo D'arcy Wretzky y es reemplazada por Melissa Auf der Maur, pero luego el año 2000 la banda anuncia su separacion. el año 2006 hay noticias de su vuelta a los escenarios acompañados de una nuevo disco; esta vez Wretz y Iha no participarian en la reunion, actualmente la banda esta conformada por Corgan, Ginger Reyes (bajo), Mike Byrne (bateria) y Jeff Schroeder (guitarra), actualmente trabajan en un nuevo album el cual sera distribuido por internet gratis.
